Sounds weird, but it works better than anything I've found: Mother's Chrome Polish. I happened to read on the label that it worked for glass, and sure enough, it does. Makes the windows just disappear, they're so clean.

For smoothing out the surface, I've used "Bar keeper's friend".. It's a mild abrasive, but it "polishes" the exterior glass up very nicely, and helps the wipers work better.

Most auto parts stores sell a product call Stoners Window Cleaner, beleive it or not it's like nothing I have ever used in all the times I have been cleaning car windows before. It's about 4 bucks and it's worth every bit of it.

Try it out.

Oh... I forgot about another way of cleaning a windshield... for those hard water spots you get on your glass you can use 0000 Steelwool to clean it without scratching the glass...

For removal of scratches you might try talking to a windshield shop about it. They might have a way of fixing the scratch like a bulleye... Also look at motorcycle stuff... They have some sort of scratch removal system for windshields too... It might be plastic but it is worth a shot!

Can you get Autoglym or Meguiars products in the states? If so they both make a Glass Polish Cream which will remove small scratches with time and elbow grease, but large scratches have to be machine polished out by a specialist.

Hope this helps.

Invisible glass (black can, yellow top) and newspaper. Works on the chrome as well.

Not sure on the Autoglym. First I've heard of it.

Meguiars, sure do.

If you want some good cleaner, get the SPRAYWAY brand in the white-and-light-blue spray can.

It's the cleaner you'll see used in tint shops and by professionals.

A homemade cleaner of distilled water, vinegar, and a tiny little bit of dish soap works well too. It's the "consumer reports" cleaner.
