Unhappy A/C evaporator leak

I just had to replace my a/c evaporator. I understand that this is a common problem,is that correct? Any ideas on how much I should have payed? Is there something I can do so it doesn't happen again? I payed approx. $450.00

Just changed mine heck of a job to say the least. I changed accumilator reciever/drier to. Got the parts at advance all the above oil charge and 3 cans 134 also expansion valve was just over $300 just charged and ran it today works great but rough job its doable just be sure to pull a good vaccumeon the system.
