A/c Compressor Locking Up???!!

My a/c has been working fine but today after getting out of the truck, i let it sit for a little bit running while i unloaded and i saw some smoke coming out from underneath. What i discovered was the compressor was what seemed to be locking up. (cluth stopped spinning). But i think it is more than the clutch because the drive belt was actually smoking going around the pulley. I turned everything off and came back to it a little while later and the a/c is still blowing cold and the pulley seemed to be starting to lock up again. Anybody know what is up with this thing??

Sounds like the bearing in the pully is gone, but it could be the compresser too. If you have the AC off does the belt still start smoking? If no your compresser is going.

Bad news, checked on the price and they aren't cheap....$250-350. I figure it should be as simple as swapping the compressor and charge it back up right??

Not if you want a warranty. Compressor manufacters require a new accumlator, expansion tube, and the system flush. If you pull out the tube(outlet of the condenser) and its pretty clean you might get by without a flush but I've never seen a compresser go and that tube be clean.
