Hi everybody,

I wondering if a few of you could please chime in with your experiences with front brakes. I'm working on the brakes of the truck in my sig (97, 4x4) and I have a persistent problem with a sticking caliper on the passenger side.

I have replaced the brake hoses on both driver & passenger side as I feared they were starting to fail and acting like check valves... No change in caliper sticking problem.

I have used silicone based grease to grease up the caliper pins, and I have cleaned up the rubber boots that the caliper pins are housed in, but I'm wondering if I should replace the rubber caliper pin boots and the caliper pins, perhaps San Felipe Bob can chime in here? Heh heh heh.

I 'm trying to avoid replacing the caliper because I'm cheap (and broke). I have cycled the piston in the caliper in and out, and it appears to be working fine (i.e. it's not cocked or rusted shut, or warped)

Pad wear is looking even on the passenger side, however on the driver side the outboard pad is wearing preferentially.

I just want the passenger front wheel to spin freely... while having brakes at the same time.

sticking caliper= warped rotor (from heat)= then buying new caliper and rotor.

I see you're in Canada so I know this price won't pertain after the Queen gets her share,but I bought semi-loaded calipers(you retain your pads) from Kragen for $43.99 U.S. They are Raybestos P.G. Excellent quality and cured my pulling problem.

 

only one good fix for a sticking caliper, that is to replace it, i have seen sticking calipers get the fluid so hot that the brakes actually faded and could not stop the truck. don't take shortcuts with your brakes, too many lives depend on it.

 

Rebuilt calipers are under $30. If you just plan your trips for a week, or you'll save enough in fuel to replace it.

Yeah I just got a rebuilt caliper for under $30 bucks as well. Good as new.

a caliper rebuild kit is about 6 USD

 

They don't sell those here anymore, just the rebuilt calipers. I called everywhere....except the dealer.
