"Brake" Light on

Man.....i knew it....Wife would come pick up the truck to take back to Texas and something would happen. Not even after 5 mins of driving! After YEARS of never giving any issue.....

I left for work this morn in "Mini Me" and as soon as i hit the parking lot.....the wife calls and says the brake light is on.....while driving....brake off. GREAT! So i had my best friend (Thank God he was visiting) check it out for me.....No brake lights at all. Turn signals work fine. No blow fuses that he can tell. BUT they are driving from MO to TX at the moment.

Here is what was done to the truck that might have helped the issues along. I borrowed my brake controller for the 05 shop Dodge to haul the trailer to the Scheid Show this last weekend. After we got back, we reinstalled the box. Just plugged in. Never had any issue before...but i know better to start thinking like that.....(Just sounds like a fuse!! I wish he would go over it with a test light…….)

I am going to pull the book and trace the schematic tonight....

My question...would a defective (Open) brake switch cause the light to come on? Just some weird timing.....AND now that the truck is back in Texas....I cant fix it....and its an issue that HAS to be fixed.......

Been searching all day....no much luck....anyone else seen this? Im sure it will be clearer after i see the circuit......

Thanks for the suggestions in advance........

Dan,
I had some weird lighting issues while towing once because the trailer wires shorted out and took out a relay, all fuses checked fine. Can't remember what relay it was, but will look in the manual.

Did you have your friend try pulling codes with the key trick?

EDIT: It was the flasher relay that was giving me grief (but my brake light on the dash never came on)

There are separate fuses/relays for the trailer lights. The trailer ones are under the hood in the black box. On a 1997 anyway, hope that helps.

Dan,
Just sent you a PM with some info from the FSM as to why the brake indicator would remain lit. Long story short: If there is an issue with the CAB (anti-lock brake system), the light will remain lit AND a DTC will be stored. Can't correlate the issue to the rest of the symptoms though.

Cool....ill have the codes checked then......got your PM...might post it up here....good info.....

What im thinking....Brake light switch...ABS uses it for a pedal sensor of sorts....if it went open....code and light....and no brake lights.....

BUT i wouldnt think that the Trailer brake controler would take out a switch......

Let me start by saying how much I love my wife....I love her, I love her, I love her. Ok...that said......Apparently when my friend was hitting the brake pedal, she failed to see the brake lights coming on....and my friend Assumed that the brake lights were inop. After talking to her some more, (AND a co-worker at her work pointing out that the lights were working just fine) we figured out its the E-brake sensor switch that is AGAIN, for the 3rd time, inop. Its cheap....and easy to replace...so im not worried about that...but the design of the switch is just junk......3rd one since '04. ANYWAY....im Happy its not anything major........thanks for all the help!
