bad fuel mileage, no power

Hi,
I have a 2001 dodge 1 ton 4x4 6 speed H.O. and I am currently getting between 9-12 miles per gallon. and it has hardly any power. I use to have a 1994 3/4 and it got between 15-23mpg and had 3 times the power that this truck has. I have heard that you have to get somemiles on it before you get good mileage but it has about 60000 miles on it. I would think that is enough. any suggestions to what the cause is please let me know.

Check your fuel pressure.
Sounds like your lift pump might be "Toes-Up"

I agree with the above two, also check your air and fuel filters. After 15k miles the mileage goes down as you are not getting enough fuel or air.

Try changing your IAT sensor or clean yours with contact cleaner, Its better to buy new, about $30. & 10 minutes to change.

Might also check for boost leaks, along with the above ideas. Tighten your hose clamps, using an 11mm deep socket (or a 7/16ths deep).

A few years back, Dodge was leaving a little red plastic cap on the vent for the fuel tank...might squeeze in there and see if it needs to be removed.

If you want to check out the IAT sensor, use a 13/16ths spark plug socket. Its deep enough.

Welcome to the greatest resource for our trucks.
All good advice above. You have enough miles that you should be getting the best mpg.
Check lift pump psi, check IAT sensor, check all intercooler connections, check for air restrictions.Get a fuel pressure gauge to keep an eye on the lift pump.
My 2wd 3500 gets 18mpg when I stay of the smoke pedal.
my .02
wk

Tammy,

Welcome to the site. It's the best.

A word of caution. Although the intercooler clamps must be tight, don't over tighten. The threads strip easily and a new clamp is $13.00, dealer only item. :'(

If the lift pump is the culprit (that's what I'd bet on) it is under warranty.

Best of luck,

Stan

Re:bad fuel mileage, no power

Tammy Just a word of advice, don't tell them to check the pump.

I think the catch-phrases are "Poor Milage", "Low Power", and "Stumbles Under Load".
That will trigger the mechanic to "Check" the fuel pressure.
However if all they do is check it at idle, they've only done part of the test.
Pressure should be greater than 8 psi at all times
Including under load at wide open throttle.
If only tested at idle it should be in the 13-16 psi range.

Good Luck.
Ed

Re:bad fuel mileage, no power

Just because it has sufficient psi at idle doesn't mean it does any other time. My second lift pump had 13 at idle, but would drop to 6 at WOT with comp off.

On the intercooler hoses, someone on this board a long time ago said that the dealer cranked down the clamps with an impact wrench. If this is incorrect, what is the proper torque setting? I just crank mine down till I can't turn it anymore.

Good point BigBlue.
I have mounted a fuel guage on the dash so I can monitor pressures at all times.
It oughta come from the factory with one. :
