Auto dimming rear view question

After years of just ignoring it, I'd like to see if my non-functioning auto dimming mirror can be made to work. My overhead console functions just fine, so is there a dedicated fuse for these things? If not, what else can be done to trouble shoot it before searching out a replacement? Thanks!

Check the connector for pulled wire/ power.

Are you referencing the wire going to the mirror itself?

I would start at the mirror and work my way to the fuse box. The fuse that powers the mirror likely powers other things that you would have noticed stopped working by now.

Check the connector for power with the key "on". No power? Head towards the fuse...power yes, likely the switch in the mirror.

Do you have a meter?

Yes, I have a meter. Do you know the voltage specs? My guess is that it's where the plug goes into the back of the mirror; it's rather loose.

While I am unsure of your exact problem my mirror quit functioning and it turned out to be the switch in the mirror itself. It wouldnt stay on or click on. Not sure how to put it.
In any case I thought it was odd that the switch broke as I dont think I ever used the switch. I just kept it on auto dim all the time.
One day I was driving down the road and some less than courteous driver was behind me with his brights on. So on a whim I reached up and held the button on just to see what would happen. Well it started dimming to my suprise. So I pulled over played with it a bit and couldnt get it to stay on. So I found a toothpick laying around in the truck broke it into smaller pieces and wedged a piece up between the switch and the housing and walla it has held the switch on for over a year now and works just fine.

If I have some free time I will look it up in my FSM.

However, anything at or under 12v will tell you that power is arriving at the switch....

Okay, I have power to the mirror and the button glows 'green' when I push it up. Should it remain illuminated or do I have a bad switch?

Do you know if the unit can be opened and serviced?

As sixslug mentioned the light should stay on. That is what mine was doing. It would turn on when depressed but wouldnt stay on once I let it go. Which is why I tried the toothpick wedge. I did not try to take it apart since it worked. I do not know if the switch is a servicable part or not. While the toothpick sounds cheesy and in reality it is a cheesy fix but it did work. I did snip it off flush with the mirror so that there is not a hunk of toothpick hanging down from the mirror.

If you do tear into it please respond here as to what you find as I may do the same.

If you do remove it and get into it,,, be sure not to overtighten the set screw when replacing the mirror or you will pop the mount off the glass and then be working on that...

FSM states a "faulty auto-dimming mirror unit shouold be replaced if not functioning properly".

No info on dissasembly, however after loking at mine, the weakness seems to be in the connector itself, which looks flimsy if a lot of adjusting is done, i.e. two or more drivers of different stature.....

Thanks for all the info. I'll try the toothpick trick for the time being and take a closer look at the switch when I have more time in a few weeks. If I come up with anything fixable, I'll report back.
