Any 2500 4X4s Without Swaybars?

I'm thinking about disconnecting my front and rear swaybars on my 02 2500. The reason being the 11" lift that I have on it. Was just wondering if anyone has had their front and rear swaybars off and what it drove like.

Thanks!

I took the rear off mine and it rode like a dream. Very smooth and no more skipping in a turn or pogo sticking over a speed bump. It handle pretty good to. I put it back on though cause with it off, I couldn't slide my rear end out unless it was wet. ;D

Anyone without the front one attached? That's the one I'm really concerned with haveing the most detrimental effect.

I have driven several cars and a Jeep Wrangler with the front bar off. In a word SCARY! If you are driving it on the street do yourself a favor and leave it on.

John

I notice the "skipping in a turn" thing when I make a right turn onto a 55 mph road on my way to work. Does it when pulling out from a stop while turning and accelerating in 2nd gear.

I also can break the tires loose while accelerating on a freeway on-ramp cloverleaf going 45 mph. that surprised me.

Are you guys saying this is due to my rear swaybar? this is the bar going across the rear axle that makes sort of a "U" right behind the diff? As I understand it, this is part of the camper package, and it would make sense that it would be the most useful for tall, heavy loads. otherwise, just take it off? Does it require special tools to remove? do you have to pre-load it in some way before it can come off or go back on?

You need a 15mm socket for the bolts on the axle. For the little links that tie it to the frame, you'll need an 18mm socket and wrench. Have fun with the one by the gas tank. You have to loosen one of the straps on the tank so you can push it over far enough to get a socket or something behind it. You'll have to use a deep well (I don't know what size) to loosen it. Good luck. I liked mine being off but I like sliding turns better. ;D

Re:Any 2500 4X4s Without Swaybars?

I currently have a very harsh ride.
Not bouncy, so I know it's not the shocks, but harsh, kinda like I have no springs and am sitting on the axles.
(skyjacker front springs, add-a-leaf in back with camper package helper springs)

I think I'm going to try disconnecting the sway bar to see if that softens it up a bit.

There was a discussion on pavementsucks.com about it, and most people didn't have a problem, as long as they remembered to take it easy on corners, or freeway on/off ramps.

I know it will help my articulation off road, as currently I have none.

Try looking up JB quick disconnects I don't know if they make them for our big trucks but I had a set on my 1991 Jeep Cherokee with 9" of lift. They worked excellent just pull two pins, one on each side and sway bar flips out of the way. Unreal articulation but scary on the street with it disconnected. 8) 8)

Re:Any 2500 4X4s Without Swaybars?

john, thanks for the info. I thought the bar would be loaded even at rest.

phox, please tell us what you find -- I can see disconnecting the rear sway bar for running empty. thats what comes with the camper package. but he front one is std. are you going to take off the front one or just the rear? I'd be concerned about understeer if you take off the front one. we have a pretty heavy load up there.

I'm going to start with just disconnecting the front.
The rear is impeded by the fuel tank, and I don't want to have to deal with moving it to get to the bolts.

I'm planning on doing it this weekend, then taking a drive on pavement, and offroad to see how it handles.
Figured while I was under there putting the front driveline back on so I can try the 4 wheel with the new lift for the first time, I'd disconnect the sway bar.

I'll a report after the weekend (if I survive )

phox
