Re:AIR COND COMPRESSOR PROBLEMS
There are two reasons that I know of that these units are set up to run with the heater. First of course is that the mist on the windows is knocked off rapidly, but second, in early years there were many problems with the AC compressors after sitting all winter without running. The seals would go bad. So adding air to the defrost cured the problem. The dodge also runs it whenever the dash vents are on.

I cannot tell a difference in mileage between the air on or off. As a matter of fact I run the air with heat a lot of the time because of the comfort of dry air. It also keeps you awake on long trips. I use the floor/defrost with heat a lot of the time.
Re:AIR COND COMPRESSOR PROBLEMS
Just a comment, three or four nights ago, I woke up all sweaty in a truck stop. It was 80 degrees all night. Hense the tornados, it is going to 36 tonight, that happened in about eight hours.
