My AC quit working. It was not a graual decrease, but a sudden stop. I was driving to town to the bank and it was working great. When I got there I shut off the truck, did my business and when I came back out the AC would not work. The fan blows but the air is not cold. I looked under the hood at the AC components and could not see any signs of a leak. Is there possibly a fuse or relay that went bad?

 

There sure is. Check them first. Check the connectors to the compressor and several switches on the lines.

 

Check the high pressure line that runs by the battery box for a hole

 

I had the evaporator/coil go out on my 98. Apparently a fairly common occurence.

 

ellmannbru, from what I've heard about getting to the evaporator coil I feel for you! They say it is a pain to get to under the dash?

 

My bet is that the little springs/fingers that activate the compressor clutch have broken. Make sure that the comp clutch is revolving wheh the switch is activated.

 

When I first bought my dodge, my first road trip started fine and then some idiot pulled right out in front of me, and drove about 20 mph down the hiway where I couldn't pass, well I naturally honked the horn instead of doing what I wanted to do. Well it was a hot day and the a/c was on. The horn stuck on, because of stuff around the button, but blew the fuse for the horn. soon after that, it started to heat up inside the cab, the a/c had quit. All we had was vent air. It turned out that the low tone horn, ( there is one low tone and one high tone horn), was shorted to ground, and every time I honked the horn, it blew the fuse. Well when this fuse was out the a/c would not work! With the shorted horn unplugged, the horn would work, but sound rediculous, and the a/c would continue to work also. I got a low tone dodge horn from the junkyard, wired it in and everything is back to normal. Sorry this is so long, too many beers late at nite mabee, but that is what happened to me.
