ABS and PARK BRAKE light ON

What would make my abs light and park brake light come on?
The speedo also bounced to zero a couple times, at first.
It does not do it now.
If you cycle the ign switch it resets the lights but they come back on after a while dosn't seen to be any pattern of when.
I'm thinking speed sensor on the diff, but why does the speedo still work??/
*** ??
Is there a way of reading codes at home with no reader tools???

Thanks
Grant.

I think your right Grant... The spped sensor on the rear axle is the place to start. The computer can see changes in the sensor that the guage isn't really showing you. But you did say it dropped to ZERO a few times.

So... Start by checking codes... And by changing your sensor on the rear alxe....

If theres a disruption in the signal, it'll throw a light even though you don't notice it in the speedo. I had that happen for about a week before I noticed the speedo bouncing around. I replaced the sensor, was fine for a month, then did it again. Found a broken wire by the end of the fuel tank/swaybar endlinks that was causing the trouble.

FYI, if your brake switch isn't adjusted properly, it'll throw a light around 40 mph. One more thing that was causing problems on my truck.

Pretty sure years previous to 98/99 you counted the number of flashes,
98/99 being the first year of the computerized engines and ODBII compliancy, you couldn't get the codes either way, and had to have them scanned.

I tried that pin thing on my '98.. 2nd pin from the right on the bottom produced a large draw of current.. I don't think that's the right one...

Exclamation

Mine had the same problem, you might want to check out the wires leading to your sensor...

I found that one of mine had a slice in it causing all the problems...

But of course that was after I bought the speed sensor on the rear diff...

My 99 dually has had the ABS and Brake lite on for over a year. I just haven't had time or place to check the axel sensor. Interestingly everything else works just fine. I don't have any spedo or gage problems, radio works, cd player works, windows work, locks work, even the grid heaters work. maybe it is just a bare wire????

About the only thing I did was drag a huge trailer full of logs thru a 3 foot deep creek for about 50 yards then up the other bank. There wasn't any water in the rear end or trans and none got inside the truck either. It was some time after this that the lites came on. Just driving down the interstate.

Umm, I do.. There was life before ABS. In fact, my truck stops better without it.
