there usually is a problem with the pivot or the plug. on mine the elbow was rotted out.

fix yours or go to the dreaded dodge dealer and buy a reman.

lots of threads

I just replaced mine on my 1996 CTD and it wasnt too bad. The sending unit was $60 from the dealer, it comes separately (pn: 4797738). They will try to sell you the entire module (over $300) and it isnt needed. Plan on changing your fuel lines and convert to flexible lines. Make sure your get high quality diesel rated fuel hose. My hard lines coming out of the tanks were in pretty good shape so I didnt replace them, but many are in pretty bad shape and alot of folks convert to a draw straw in the tank. Also, be careful taking the electical connector off on top of the tank, it has an odd locking clip that you cant see really well. The clip slides all the way out and the the connector will separate (be patient with it). I redid the fuel hose hangers and used protective loom wherever they were going to rub alot against the frame.

Make sure you look at the brake line that runs behind the tank...mine was rotted out and I replaced it while the tank was down. The locking ring will off the tank without too much trouble if you use a big strap wrench.

All of the above assumes that you will drop the tank. Alot of the guys that have done this will raise the truck bed and do the work from the top. I decided to drop the tank and so I could address some rust in the area.

Hope this help. Do a search on sending unit and you will a get a ton more info.

Anthony
