97 Exhaust

I bought my truck used some time ago. The muffler and tailpipe's been replaced by a muffler shop I assume. It has a car muffler and the transition from the cat back is ugly. I'm currently unemployed so money's tight. Anyhow I was at an auction this past weekend and picked up a like new stock muffler and tailpipe for the princely sum of $18. I'm wondering if it'll be an improvement to what I currently have. See the pics.

Forgot to add the truck is stock.

Thanx

John

Hard to say.

The stock exhaust is supposed to be a 3 inch diameter, thru a muffler and resonator to a 4 inch tip.

The stock muffler on my 01 was a straight thru design, but constricted and the stock tail pipe was only about 2.5 inches where it bent up to clear the rear axle.

I r/r'd it with a full 4 inch diameter MBRP Turbo back system with straight thru muffler. It breathes easier and is louder than stock.

You will have to experiment with it and see.

Note: Cummins spec'd a 4 inch exhaust for their 5.9 liter diesel engine, Chrysler saved money by going with a 3 inch tube and a 4 inch tip.

When money's tight an $18 stock replacement system is probably 10 times better then what you are looking at now!

I had a similar problem with my truck when I got it, it HAD a 4" "cat back" system, rotted off while test driving it. Dealer said he'd take care of it, they threw on a 2.5" system from the last piece of factory 3", kinked it pretty good making the tail pipe and threw a gasser muffler on it. Could barely get above 70mph. I made a 4" system (straight at first, then added a muffler) and it was like night and day even with a quiet muffler made for diesels. Good luck!

I don't think it is, it's not that loud.

Also I found the part number on the stock muffler it's 52019324AB if anyone wants to know.
