4x4 indicator light

I have just bought a 01 Quad cab 4x4 2500 Dodge Ram and have noticed that the 4x4 indicator light on the dash wants to come on at times as I am driving down the road. I am sure it is two wheel mode. Is there a contact that need to be cleaned or something. It is sort or annoying. Thanks for any input on a remedy.

Welcome to DTR Don. The switch for the light is on the front axle on the opposite end of the vacuum motor for the 4x apply. Most times I see vac issues that doesn't allow the shift fork to move all the way over. This will sometimes allow the light to go on. With the truck running you can check for vac at the front motor (vac servo, actuator, whatever you prefer). In the 2x position you should have full vac at the red line, move it to 4x and you should have full vac to the black line. Check one of the vac fittings under the hood to verify what full vac is on your truck. Most common probs I see are broken vac lines, and an occasional switch on the transfer case stuck and not redirecting the vac to the front motor like it should. Does the truck shift in and out of 4x fairly quick? Hope this helps.

On my '95 the 4x4 light would sometimes flash if I hit a big bump. It turned out to be the wires running to the switch on the front axle, they got damaged and would rub together making the light flash.
