285's with stock wheels
Called today to buy the tires & they refused to mount them on a rim less than 8.5" wide. Said it was a legal issue that the company adopted after someone was killed because a 315 was mounted on a 7" wheel & it blew causing a wreck. Guess I'll spend a little more & get them local.

I wonder how Dodge can put 285/70/17's on 17x8 wheels on the power wagon and GM can put 315/70/17's on 17x8.5? I'd say they're feeding you a line of crap.
I'm running 285s on the stock steel wheels without issue and they look to me like they are exactly right, a 9" wheel would not seem to pull in the tire bead and keep it seated as well. Seems like you need a different shop
