Won't pass smog in CA!

We have to smog every other year, and my '99 passed two years ago. The only difference between now and then that I can think of is that I had a BHAF in it before, and the OEM air box in it now. 177,xxx miles.

On the Visual Inspection Result Information, it passed: Computers, Sensors, Switches, Wiring, Fuel Metering, Turbocharger/Supercharger, and Smoke Check, Crankcase Emission Controls, Other Emission Related Component Systems, Vacuum Lines to Sensors/Switches

On the Emission Control Systems Functional Check Results, It failed: OBD Vehicle Communication, OBDII

So, what's the likely culprit?

Most of the time just need to get ECM flash update. Diesels weren't required back in 1998 to be smog checked. So OBDII info was not required to be stored in the ECM. Flash update saves a block of memory for OBDII storage. Federal trucks didn't require this but California trucks do. You most likely never had ECM updated or replaced. Try getting ECM updated and then getting smog tested again.

What a load of crapola. Ill never step foot in that crazy, Looney tunes state, never mind living there.
Geesh... Emission testing on old trucks.

Starting with the plug under the dash, check if you can connect with a code reader.

In some cases the 98.5 and 99 had some weird protocol issues so that they are not compatible with the equipment used by CA smog stations.
Maybe a different station has a reader that will connect.. I would go there and ask them if it's possible to check if their reader connects, and if it works just get the check done there.

More people are leaving than coming in. A portion of the incoming mob is coming for the generous welfare benefits. Moon and the Democrat run legislature just OK'd the cap and trade act which allows big business to continue to pollute as long as they buy "credits". The credit money goes straight to Sacramento. Moon's even got the enviro nutcases upset.
