Winter Fuel Mileage
Just curious if it is normal for CTD to slip a little on fuel mileage during the winter months when it gets cold? If so what is the reason and is there anyway to correct that problem. Thanks a lot.

I got 13.7 last tank, only 1400 miles on the truck so far...Just did the tone ring and BHAF, and was hoping to see 15...But now temps are in the teens, and I've dropped to 12.5 overhead due to morning warm-up

Many factors come into play.
Winter Fuel (less energy than straight #2),
colder fuel (thicker),
colder engine (much fuel wasted out the tailpipe till it gets up to temp),
more idling (to get it warmed up).

Best thing you can do is...
Just my 2 cents to help!
- Put your truck in a garage. (even if it's not heated)
- Plug in the block heater.
- Use your jake to warm the engine in the morning. (EGT 400-450*F)
- Allow it to get up off the 140*F mark before taking off.

I have lost aprox. 2 mpgs, It's hard to tell though because I did my exhaust and BHAF a few weeks ago, so I have been into hearing the truck run a bit more latley.
Seriously though, what Phox said. I lost about the same miles per last winter.

completely normal
cold fluids take more energy to move around and you have to spend more time to warm up and clear windows etc. A minute or so of idling on a daily basis will eat into milage.

If you remove the air tube from the air filter box that goes into the fender it will make it louder.
If you replace the entire air filter box with a BHAF you will really hear it sing...
Then straight pipe it! It will whistle all the time in my case!

MoparMan,
Im still new at the whole CTD scene but what is a BHAF? Some sort of forced air intake? Any power increase noticable w/o the silencer ring?

BHAF = Big Honkin Air Filter. Do a search...you will see lots of pictures!
No hp increase when removing Ring...just sounds like there is. In some cases removing the ring does reduce turbo "bark". You won't run into that while still stock.
Is your truck a 98 - 12v...or a 98.5 - 24v CTD?

They answered your q's, go ahead and lose the ring, it really becomes noticeable when you get rid of the stock airbox.
Mine is on the fringe on being annoying, but not yet
