Where did my "Chirp" go?
Where did my "Chirp" go?
Hey All!
Sorry if this is old stuff - search engine was for me on this one
. Where did my Chirp on shutdown go? I had thought, right or wrong (please don't laugh), that the chirp was a product of shutdown compression causing the belt to slip just a wee tad and rolling over one of the pulleys. Now my chirp has mysteriously vanished and I miss it and I want it back because NOW I think something is wrong. Crazy, huh? I do have a chirp coming from the alternator and I'm thinking that we will soon be throwing out a pulley bearing - either that or the water pump is getting sloppy. My hearing isn't so good any more as I am an older phart. We have some pretty arduous RV towing coming up at the end of the month and I am trying to make sure that the beast is good to go, oh yeah, and the truck too!
Thanks and Cheers!
Mike

I believe the chirp takes place at the a/c pulley. Mine comes and goes, but happens mostly in the hot summer months. If everthing else looks and sounds good, i wouldn't worry too much about it.
How old is your serpentine belt? I seem to recall that my "chirp" was gone or nearly so until I put a new belt on the truck. Now it chirps nearly every time I shut down. I suppose the old belt was slipperier than the new one and just didn't grab and slip/chirp as well.
Hey Jumper, oddly enough I just put on a brand new Dayco serpentine belt. The chirp had already gone before I put the new belt on though.
Kreynolds - thanks for your response, I appreciate the info.

My original chirped. The new one I put on about three years ago hasn't chirped at all.
I wonder if it has anything to do with removing the puke bottle on mine? I did that at the same time IIRC.

My chirp went away when I put on an aftermarket belt tensioner. I'll rebuild the factory one for a spare. New or old belt doesn't seem to matter anymore. I'm like you though, for awhile I thought something was wrong, since it didn't chirp.
