When to adjust valves
When to adjust valves
I got just a little over 150,000 on m y truck. Was just wondering if it would help if I get my valves adjusted. Have been noticing my fuel mileage slightly dropping off. And if i do get them adjusted what is the cost I will be looking at to get it done
Thats cummins recommended spec. Allowable is from .007-.015" on the intake, and .015-.030" on the exhaust. But I've heard of guys running .005" and .015", supposedly helps spool. I'm gonna try those specs one of these days.

My valves need adjusting. Is the smaller setting recommended by someone that knows what they're doing, documented their results or is it simply a regurgitation of some long forgotten post?
Rotate the engine to TDC and you can check 1 intake & exhaust, 2 intake, 3 exhaust, 4 intake, 5 exhaust. At BDC you can check 2 exhaust, 3 intake, 4 exhaust, 5 intake, 6 intake & exhaust. Use the timing mark on the injection pump drive gear to verify TDC and BDC. The FSM states that as long as the lash is within tolerance there is nothing to be gained by adjusting them. So, IMHO, check and only adjust the ones that are out of tolerance.
