what type of oil
trans questions
So I took my pickup in to get the trans fixed again
. I can't seem to hold the counter shaft bearing together. I took it in and the guy asked me what oil am I running and if I tow in 5th gear. I answered with 85/90 senthic and yes. well he told me wrong oil and not advisible to tow in 5th. he told me that i am to run engine oil, mopor nv4500 fluid, or ATF? does that sound right ATF in a manual trans. doesn't sound right to me but i have heard from people around here its what you do. I'm am not sure on this so i was askin on here to double check. and why can't a person tow in 5th gear???????????

Some trannies spec ATF even in a manual trans. Your NV4500 is NOT one of them, though!
Your trans hold 8.5pts of Castol Syntorque 75w-90. That's the spec.
I know some people have had good results with Redline MT-90, which is a thicker version of the MTL that we six-speed guys often use.
As for towing in 5th gear, that's BS. But towing heavy in 5th is VERY hard on the trans because of the hammer-like driveline impacts going down the driveline. Keep in mind the 4500 is only rated to 460 lb-ft of tq and GCWR of 19K. So if you are overpower or overloaded, things get worse faster.
All you need to know about the 4500 is here: http://quad4x4.com/NV4500%205th%20Ge...0Solutions.htm

The Castrol Syntorque is hard to find, unless you go to the dealer and get raped. I changed my fluid out to Amsoil MTG, and I will not have to worry about the tranny or another fluid change again.
Its hard on it towing it 5th becous you are driving a small gear with a big gear. You can do it and will probobly be fine but it is a risk. I do it all the time but I know it is not good for it. I worked for a shop rebuilding trans for 1ton and up to big rigs. We had about 30 NV4500s out back for parts that all had the input gear melted from towing in overdrive. Lots of load and HP just makes it happen faster. Your 4.10 gears will take some of the load off of the trans. I have tryed Amsoil and Shafers and I will stick with the oil from dodge. Makes it shift better. The 5.9 is a medium duty motor but the rest of the truck is not even close.
