I smell diesel

When i get out of the truck i just purchased i can smell diesel. This is the first diesel I have ever owned. Is this normal? i looked under the truck but found no leaks. Well, no leaks that smelled like fuel. We have had a lot of rain around here latley so there is water splashed under the truck. Are there any trouble areas like this on these trucks or has anyone had this issue? i have a 2002 3/4 6-speed, 62K miles. Thanks.

Its pretty common for the fuel line to rust and leak between the tank and frame rail. However, if you're truck is from Texas it shouldn't have rotted out that quickly.

Well, these do tend to smell like diesel, but it shouldn't be too strong. Your fuel lines should not be rusted through...mine has 110000 miles on it and the fuel lines are fine. The fuel system is located on the driver's side of the truck/block. Some areas which could cause leaks: The fuel filter housing (if the gasket/o-ring was improperly fitted or stretched a small amount of fuel can leak out there), The Lift pump (If the banjo fittings were over or under tightened, the washers can rupture). I guess the fuel pump could leak, but I think that is rare. Check your oil level...is it High? A mjor fuel leak will drip and a minor one will evaporate...but if you look in thses areas while the truck is running, you should be able to see of fuel is being pushed out.

It is also possible that nothing is wrong, and you need to get used to the fact that on a hot day you can definately tell that these are diesels...even when they are off.

I love the smell of diesel!

What about the rubber lines between the injector and the metal lines? Or does the 02 models not have rubber lines?
I had to replace mine a few yrs back, it started with just the odor, then I started having starting issues due to air in the lines. Then I started seeing fuel on the ground.

You'll get a pretty strong smell after changing the oil.
Smell will stick around for 500 miles or so.
Smell will vary depending on the brand of oil you use.

It could be this you are smelling, and being new to Diesel trucks, you think it is Diesel.

Me and a buddy figured it out. The injectors were not tightened good. A quick turn of the wrench and problem was solved. Thanks for all you input
