What should my fuel economy be?
I found MPG depends on your driving environment (look where the guys are in the posts) and your driving style.
I was fooled at first too by all the 20MPG talk when I got my truck. I felt cheated. Did tons of reading and a BUNCH of stuff trying to get that out of my truck too but just gave up. Edge EZ, clean IAT and MAP, AFE air filter, etc.
Everybody is different. Here is the cold hard truth...
I was born big boned. I have heavy bumpers on my truck. I have a regular toolbox on the back stuffed full (heavy). I live in TX where I can drive on a road as fast as I want to gamble a ticket.
I get 15-16 average doing 70 unloaded.
If I drive 60-65 with the EZ on 1 along with PS or MMO with fillups and treat the pedal like its a feather when accellarating I get 17.
If I take a long road trip on the interstate I turn into a wild man with a touch of road rage. I try to keep up with fools who have no regard for the speed limit using them for bear bait doing 75-80. In this mode of operation she gets about 14-15.
These numbers are hand calculated and figuring an extra 10% for my 285 tires. My GPS said for every 10 miles I drove I was actually going 11 if I recall.
Like I said I've read all the MPG posts on a bunch of websites and have determined the guys claiming 20 MPG seem to have one or more of these things in common:
1- They are streatching the truth and avoiding their pain. This is a phychological tactic - it makes them feel good. They secreatly get all giddy inside while they talk or type about this. They enjoy the looks on other truckers faces while the words are coming out of their mouth.
2- These drivers are at peace with the world around them, the road in front of them, and are perfectly content with the time they have left to live.
3- These folks are stuck driving daily on ice and snow ridden roads. If they were to drive over 55mph they would be risking their life and they choose not to do this.
or 4- These guys have spent so much money with mods they could have easily build them their OWN concept truck from scratch and sold the plans to whoever would put a Cummins engine in a truck.
Do yall think if I ripped my muffler and cat I could squeeze any extra?

)Been there and also went through an inferiority complex for a while.
I'm convinced there is a fair amount of exageration.... for whatever reason. You list some good ones! I believe an Auto, 4x4, repeatedly doing 20 mpg is very, very rare. (read impossible). JMOTruck weight is a biggy that often gets overlooked. My 16-17 mpg is at 7600 lbs (state scales) w/ me and full fuel!
If your muffler & Cat are stock, I think you might gain a little!

The reason I ask is because my engine has 385k on it......or atleast the truck has that on the odometer.
