I've already got the fuel gauge installed (first thing I did when I got the truck).

I'll start shopping for a gauge package... are the ISSO (I think thats the name of them) gauges any good? I know I saw those for sale on several of the sites sponsored here. I'm assuming the A-pilar is the best place to mount them?

Thanks again everyone for all the help!

An aftermarket external tranny cooler wouldn't hurt either.

I think with a tranny temp gauge & a lock up switch you will be ready to go. Just take it easy & don't get in no big hurry going. Your probable going to need a brake controller for the trailer brakes too.

Everything I've seen so far is to make it go. You have to stop also. Get a GOOD brake controller. I love my Maxbrake, its tied into the hydraulic brakes of the truck for true proportional braking.

You are very lucky to have a 3.55 in this truck. You do NOT want to tow in 5th no matter how much you will be tempted to. Leave it in 4th. Im assuming you are manual.. if you are auto Im not sure.. I dont think auto trans holds up in these years pulling very long.. the new ones can pull all day..

The only mod you need is an EGT gauge and or an EGT idiot light. You can buy senders on ebay.. I set mine to go off just at 1300F I think.. big read light so I know I have only a few seconds before my turbo melts. this is ALL you need.. these are wussy weights for this truck. I've pulled 30k with mine for 1500 miles. If I had known about fifth gear at that time I wouldnt have broke my trans doing it.

The edge is near useless at these weights.. you dont want to use it for pulling.. I dont know why these guys are telling you to get one. I have one in mine and it stays off or on the #1 setting which is almost nothing when I pull. And this is per tech support at edge.

I would also STRONGLY urge any 2nd gen owner to install a low fuel pressure light. It will save you big dollars. Geno's garage sells a really nice little set up and it took me about 1 hr to install.

EDIT: oh hell I see you have an auto trans. Hmmm better baby it! Id change the fluid often and hope for the best but it wouldnt stop me! Want to trade my trans for yours? I dont pull with mine anymore.. its my little run around town and terrorize truck. lol

I'm concerned about how the truck will handle this load since its close to the manufacture's limit with an auto and 4.10 gears (my truck has 3.55's, but the manual doesn't specify a weight with those gears). So what do I need to do to make sure the truck is up for the challenge?

I've already done the following:

replaced stock fuel pump with Airtex Fuel pump
added Fuel Gauge
changed diff and tranny fluids
New ball joints (they were completely shot at 106k)
repacked front bearings
new rear shocks
new shoes and chevy 1 ton slave cylinders

I'm also considering adding a manual lock up for the torque converter. Is there a kit out there that you can buy, or is this one of those DIY only type of mods, and is it worth it?

The truck has a 115.5k on it, VP44 was replaced at 90k.

Thanks for all the help guys, this forum has been a huge help in getting me up to speed on all things diesel.

The stock auto in my 01 wnet 397000 b4 pulling it to replace the tc and freshen the clutchs, wasnt slipping, but being on the road constantly with a 48 ft trailer i figured it was about time.. the best advise i have for the guys pulling under 26000 gross weight with the stock auto is change the fluid, filter and do the band adjustment every 7500 miles when u change the oil..

His signature says auto tranny....and he will have no trouble with that weight, assuming tranny is in good working order. Just keep the rpm's up on steep grades by locking out the OD. I would want to be over 1700-1800 rpm at all times. JMO

'Strong05' - Isspro gauges are good quality. Have had mine for 6 yrs and 170,000 miles with no problems. BUT, if I were installing new today, I'd be temped to go with Diprocol 'Optrix'. Just think they are easier to read with better backlighting at night....and cooler looking. Also JMO.

I tow a 10K 5th wheel with the truck in my signature and it does a great job. I can easily tow in OD unless in big hills. Previous owner (family member) towed a 12K RV with the truck stock but he is much more patient than I am.

RowJ and Can17, Thanks for the feedback on the guage setups. I'm def going to look into both brands.

Thanks for the feedback safehaul!!! I've read both good and bad feedback all of the computer programmers. I know in the gasser world the only time you might stand a chance at gaining some power is with a turbo... my old firebird actually made less hp with the programmer installed on the dyno then with the factory tune (of course that was N/A).

That's really tempting on the tranny swap... I was originally looking for a manual when I bought this truck, but I couldn't find one. Where are you located?

Thanks again everyone for all the response's!
