Well, I've gone and done it now.

I'm admiring a guys truck at wally world parking lot(01 2500 4wd auto). He says he'll just sell it to me.
He tells me how much, says he drives it every day. I get his number and call him a week later.
Problem: The truck quit on him the day before, and it's in the shop being repaired.
I ask him what happenned?
He was driving down the hwy and it just went to idle. He drove it to the shop, but, it was pretty much idle speed. He said the shop had already changed the lift pump and the tank unit thinking it wasn't getting fuel.
I said STOP! How much for it the way it sits? He tells me (and this is where I screwed up) I said SOLD.

I pick it up, unload it off the trailer, head down the road. Just as I think it should hit 2nd, it fall flat on it's face. Hmm?? Trans??
I turn around, stick it in 1st, and try to run up some rpms in 1st gear. Truck hits 2000 rpm and falls on it's face. (cool, I'm back to what I thought..VP bad). BUT, now I have a belt squeel also. (great.....)
I pull it in the shop, change out the injector pump, head down the road with my new belt squeel noise...and 2000rpm it falls on it's face.
HUH? Okay fine, it's the APPS and like an idiot, I bypassed the potatoes and went straight for the meat. LOL.
I change the APPS, reset, and go again. SAME THING.

Okay, now I'm baffled.
Tired, going home. Be back tomorrow to check codes. In the meantime, I fully expect a solution. So guys, start typing!

(grrrr....I've never been wrong about a bad VP....)

Just pulled codes 1693 and 0222.
I've changed the injector pump AND the APPS.
Zero change in problem. No better, No worse, No different at all.
Truck just falls on it's face (dead pedal) at about the time you'de think it's shifting from 1st to 2nd.
If you hold it in 1st, it does this right before 2000rpm.

UPDATE: For those of you experiencing a similar problem.

Make sure the prev owner didn't price you a truck, take it home, and start removing aftermarket performance parts. LOL.
When a truck quits on you, it's always best to ask yourself WHAT was done last/recently? In this case, some type of aftermarket controller was removed. The next day the truck quits. Ends up at a shop where nothing is said about it. Ends up in my hands where nothing is mentioned.
Turns out a few spliced wires had been re-connected poorly and had come lose inside of a loom.
Truck now runs correctly. WooHoo!!

hacked truck

Sounds like you jumped on this truck and priced it yourself-
glad it worked out for you- sounds like a truck most would have walked away from

I'm pleased with it. AND, I'm pretty much pleased with the "fix" ordeal. I assumed an injector pump. Which means I assumed 1.5hrs of labor and $650.
Well, the 1.5hrs turned into 6hrs, but, no parts $$.
Since I'm not worth $100/hr...I'm happy, happy, happy!

I am confused. You replaced a fuel pump AND an injection pump which had to be close to 1500.00 plus dollars and come to find out all it was was two wires and you are pleased?
