Unhappy Way too much smoke at idle.....

Yep, now I'm positive...... My truck is smoking WAY too much at an idle......

Starts o.k, seems to run o.k, does seem to miss a bit when it's cold??? Nothing major.

Checked the air filter, fresh fuel filter.

It obviously smokes worse when the engine is cold, but even once warmed up it i still putting up a pretty good fog. Seems it used to have quite a bit of white smoke no seems more blue.

Not really sure what to think or what else to check. I can't really see a haze behind me or anything when I'm driving, truck runs great out on the highway.

But parked next to other idling CTDs mine is obviously smoking, temp hasn't been too cold lately around 30 F.

I can't really say if it's burning oil 'cause I have the vacuum pump leak, put it this way, doesn't seem to be leaking any faster.

The smoke is quite eye stinging, I think it smells like raw fuel....? Maybe I'm wrong.

Could this be my VP dying? bad injector? Turbo seal?

I have one more month left on my third party warranty........ With my luck it's my VP or something on it's last legs and will die the day after the warranty is up.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Could be an injector washer. Try re-torquing your injector hold downs. If they are leaking compression, then you won't have enough squeeze to burn the fuel completely and --presto!-- white smoke.

hmmm... o.k. I'll have a look at that.

I would imagine that might be a symptom that might show up more at WOT or atleast under load?

You'd probably see track marks from blow by around the injector too. Definitely worth a look though.

I dunno about track marks, but you might get a pressurized fuel tank as compression pressure is bled off into the fuel return.

hmmm, true.... Definitely have not had that problem.
I'm kinda thinking either VP taking a dirt nap or bad turbo seal.

Pulled the intake tube off yet again once the truck had been run and was up to temp. Turbo looks kinda black and slimy a little, not sure if it's normal or if I might have a bad seal????

I took some pics but I don't think you can attach pics to your posts anymore??? I'll post them in my gallery. Please have a look and tell me what you think??

You could definitely feel more play in the turbo once it was warm (cold you can feel none)

ever so slightly you can move the wheel back and forth and ever so slightly up down/ side to side???

Think I have a bad bearing or something??
Turbo has been sounding normal, whsistles like it should to me.......

Back a few months ago I had posted about an unusal turbo noise under heavy boost..... ie. full throttle. seemed to growl a bit?

Think my turbo is shot and that's causing my smoke?

Plenty of blue smoke at a cold idle. No smoke when warmed up and run hard....

Let it sit and idle a bit when it's up to temp and the longer it sits there, you cans tart to see a bit of blue haze.............

What do you all think? I'll post pics right away in my galley.

Oh yeah, the other test I tried was I pulled the intake tube off, and started the truck and let run for about 10 seconds just at idle

Then watched the turbo spin down, Holy Cow that thing spinds fast even at idle eh??

Anyway, seemed to be spin fine, made no strange noises, didn't bind or stop abruptly............ I don't know what to think.

Maybe try getting your fuel from a different place..

When my truck is cold I can make my house disappear with all the smoke it makes but once it’s up to temp there is very little.

If you run it hard and you find there is no smoke after letting it idle for 5 to 10 minutes then I would look at some different fuel before going out and blowing your pocket book on a pump. The outside temp makes a big difference in cool down times but if it’s around freezing I don’t think it should smoke like the way you describe it.

If you truly think it’s the pump you may want to get it in with the complaint so if your warranty runs out and 2 days later it craps out you can say “hey guys!! I brought it but you said it was fine!! "

Yeah, I thought fuel too. But the smoke is a little blueish, even if it does smell like fuel to me???

I think I'm going to get the codes pulled. Thinking of just buying a OBD code reader. Are they all more or less the same? I have no idea what to buy.

I'll put my .02 in on your turbo.......side to side play on the shaft is normal......when the engine is running pressurized oil suspends the shaft from the bushings so there is an allowable tolerance for the oil........end to end play is not normal and definately indicates a tolerance problem with in the shaft and bushings.......I do not know if some oil could leak by the shaft and into the motor as a result of end to end play but it seems possible. If you were burning oil, I would expect a blue tint in the smoke, not white..........I was under the impression that white smoke meant a lean condition.

I'm interested in a code reader too.........don't know anything about them or what is best........I would be interested in knowing about what you find.

Yeah..... I'm just thinking of picking up one of he $249 models from CTC.............

Says it will read all OBD II compliant vehicles so I assume it should be o.k?

Hmmmm. I always thought a little end to end was o.k but side to side is bad.... Go figure.

There is a bluesish tinge which tells me burning oil bt if it's burning oil it's not much since my consumption is quite low despite my vacuum pump seal being shot.

Smoke seems to smell like fuel and it runs a tick rough when it's cold, almost makes me think injector??? I don't know.

I got a Code reader and the only code I found was P0234 Over-boost condition.

Don't know if it has anything to do with my problem. Check engine light is not on.
