Way too much HEAT

My EGT's seem too high.

When I am empty driving down the freeway 75 mph, my pyro reads aprox. 800* which dosent seem too bad. On the other hand when I hook up to the 5th wheel (aprox14-15k lbs), I really have to watch the pyro as it climbs to 1200* way fast. It will run about 1100*-1150* at 75 mph. But when I come to the slightest hill I have to drive by my pyro. and not my speedometer . My cousin has pretty much the same setup other than he has 275's instead of 50 hp injectors and a stock air cleaner instead of a scotty II. He can pull the same thing at about 200* less than me. I am thinking about going back to stock injectors and seeing what that does. any suggestions?

See sig for mods

What happens when you turn the Comp off? How much are you boosting when you run into a high egt condition? I assume you are using a boost elbow?

Have you drilled the second hole for the Scotty II? When I was running just the comp (EZ mode, stock intake, 3" straight pipe) and pulling a long grade with the trailer in tow, the temp would settle around 1100. But that was 60-65mph in 3rd gear (auto). Not quite enough power at that point to pull the big hills in overdrive and temps would also exceed 1200 when trying.

When I installed the Mach 1.6 injectors along with the Scotty II (no hole), I had plenty of power but not enough air which is why my truck is currently out of service. Now I'm not taking any chances... drilling the hole, 4" exhaust, DD cam, and an Airwerks super turbo are all in the works.

Anyway, I sort of side-tracked. I wouldn't expect that you'd have temp issues with your setup but I'd drill the hole if you haven't done so already.

Regards,
~ Russ

Comp on or off, it dosent make much difference.
Boost is aprox 25 at 1200*, if I give it more throttle I can get higher boost but also results in higher egt's. And yes I am running the boost elbow

I have drilled the 4.5" hole for the SAII

how is your tire pressure? might be getting low (maybe result of cooler air this time of year) making your truck work harder. just brainstorming...

The only thing I can see in your signature that could cause those kinds of problems are your injectors. 800* at 75 mph seems a little high for level ground...no wind.
How's the smoke? Starting? Idle?
Obviously, you should be running cooler than your cousin.

What's your max EGT...empty at WOT? You should not be able to hit 1200* IMO.

If you have the stock injectors...I would change them and re-test.

Only other option is defective PYRO. Can you cooldown to 250* after 3-5 min? (If not, this too could be injectors).

Also just brainstorming!

I would expect to see more boost... I was seeing 27 (max) psi with just the EZ. Have you checked your boot clamps lately?

smoke seems normal for the setup I have, start up and idle seem normal.
I dont know what max EGT is at WOT but I can take it to 1250* fairley easy even empty. I let it cool down to 300 before shut down and it usually takes no more than 1 1/2 min.

I can get 34 lbs of boost at WOT but if I hold it there very long EGT's go through the roof.

My cousins truck is also an HO It is almost identical to my truck. ie. 2002, quad cab, long bed, HO, 6 speed, 275 injectors, edge ez, 4" exhaust. Pretty much the same truck.

Looks like the HO idea is dead then . Good luck and I will keep on reading and hopefully learn what the solution is.

You might re-think you numbers....

Stock configuration...No engine modifications...Been like this since day one!

NO TRAILER NO LOADS
600-800*F EGT for 55 MPH Cruise Control Set - Flat or small hills...
800-1000*F EGT for 65 MPH Cruise Control Set - Flat or small hills...
1100-1200*F EGT for 65 MPH Cruise Control Set - 7% Grade 7 Miles Long...

1350 EGT @ WOT 3K RPM's 4th Gear is the highest I've seen!

With a trailer and loads...(Towing a 72 Chevy Pickup "longhorn" on a flatbed)
900-1200*F EGT for 65 MPH Cruise Control Set
- Flat or small hills
Up steep grades 5-7% I had to drive by the pyro I could reach 1300*F easy!

Interesting Mike!

Your numbers are very different than mine...on same year trucks; and my numbers have changed little with all my mods...other than EGT's at WOT.
I get...
600* @ 60 mph
700-750* @ 70 mph
800-850* @ 80 mph
Hard part of testing around here is finding a no wind day...wind obviously makes a big difference in readings.

Only reason I can think of for the difference between us is....Are you at Altitude?
Also, all my #'s are in OD. You mentioned 4th gear?

Ok... All numbers are in 5th gear (top gear)... Except the WOT numbers which was in 4th.

Altitude here can vary from 1,800 ft at Whitebird, ID to 5,200 Ft at McCall, ID

These are my normal working zone...
Whitebird, ID - 1,800 ft
Riggins, ID - 1,900 ft
Home - 3,200 ft
New Meadows, ID - 4,000 ft
McCall, ID - 5,200 ft

Been here once long before the guages...
Heavens gate Lookout tower 9,900ft (the only extreme here...)
