Water seperator?

I've been lifting the lever on the water seperator when I fuel up. I have only noticed a few drops of water coming out. My question is when you guys change your fuel filter or lift pump some suggest to drain the fuel filter housing. How do you do this? Like I said when i lift the lever on mine almost nothing comes out. Thanks for indulging a newbie.

We were all newbies at one time.

What you are seeing coming out is most likely Diesel.
Reason you only see a couple drops is vacuum.

Best thing to do is put a clear jar or bottle (20 oz coke bottles work great) at the end of the hose, open the valve then either loosen the cap on the filter cannister, or turn the key to on,
you should see a lot come out.
Don't let it all drain out, or you'll never get the truck started again, just a little, as water will be at the bottom of the cannister.

Let this sit in the clear jar for a bit, Diesel being an oil, will float on the water, the water will go to the bottom.
Small quantites of water will appear as bubbles a the botom of the jar.

In the 3 years I've had my truck, I've never seen a droplet of water.
I stopped draining it at every fill up about the 2nd fillup.

Now every 10,000 miles when I change the filter, I drain it into the bottle just to make sure I'm still not getting water.

I've never seen the water in Fuel light on...(actually i have different story)

I've never seen water in the filter housing either... I take a shop light and look into the filter housng when I pull the filter. Then I drain the contents...

Once in awhile I might drain a few oz's of fuel to check but I never seen water yet...

----

As for the WIF light... becareful when you power washing your engine with high pressure water. I got a bit of water in the WIF sensor connection and tripped the light. A little blast of compressed air solved the problem. But it's nice to know the light works...

Put a container like a plasic pop bottle under the drain hose. Open the lever and crack the top of the filter housing open. Make sure you don't use the 1/2" square hole in the top to open it, use the hex shaped part around the square hole. I think it's a 1 1/4" socket. There was a problem with cracking the top by using the square hole. That will let air in and it will drain the canister. When you are done and the new filter is in close the drain valve and bump the starter to fill the canister. You might have to do it a couple of times but it will fill and purge the air. Should start right up after that.

if you want to see fuel and or water come out , lift valve, bump starter and stand back ( be prepared for a lot of fuel to come out: ) some times the drain valve will get plugged and this is a fast method to clear it
