Water pump... "gasket" or "o-ring"??

Getting ready to do my pump today, and the seal that came with it is a square cross section solid ring.

Per the instructions, it says to use tacker if it's a gasket, or lubricant if it's an o ring.

It's really neither. Should I use nothing?

Thanks.

i didnt use anything on mine when i replaced the pump. A little dab of grease maybe to hold the ring in the groove on the pump while you are getting it in place and starting the bolts

Used a bit of tack to get it in just right, thanks.

Now I have a bubble.

Which screw/plug should I remove to fill it up with?

bubble = pocket of air in the cooling system.

When the motor heats and then cools, it will pull coolant from the overflow and completely fill the engine.

It ended up being about a 1.5 gallon sized bubble after I vented the upper passages.
