water in fuel light

I was out snowboggin today, and my water in fuel light came on. I took the stock liftpump and filter housing off. So why would the light come on? I never taped off the old connections or anything, so I'm wondering if it just got wet. Ideas?

I have discarded my filter housing as well, if I'm in heavy rain or at the car wash my lite will come on, the end is not taped up, I'd suspect its wet or shorted across a piece of metal, no need to worry, but it is annoying.
