Which VP44's Interchange?
It isn't a matter of years, rather a matter of engine. The 235 SO (standard Output) is cheapest, usually, and is considered best if any fueling modules are added. The 245 HO (High Output) is for HO trucks, running 6 spd. Manual transmissions in 2001, or those HO trucks with 48RE Autos -- I don't know when the changes came before adding the common rail injection. The HO pump has some internal modifications that produce the higher fuel pressure used to make the extra 10 ponies over the SO pump, but it isn't capable of providing enough fuel for some of the higher horsepower modules out there, making it a poor choice for many people compared to the SO pump. Then there is the HRVP or Hot Rod VP44, which is great if you stay pretty much stock, or add some new injectors, but doesn't deliver any more fuel with many high horsepower modules, since the modules bypass the HRVP improved electronics to control fuel delivery. My shopping showed a $600 premium for a HRVP over a SO, so I bought the SO and the 120HP Quadzilla Xzillaraider module instead. I still have about $300 to either increase injector size, put towards another module or programmer, or to beef up the tranny.

What about the low fuel pressure light they sell is it worth 81.00? Can I make the same thing myself with off the shelf parts?
I have an 02 H.O. and would like to switch to the SO pump when the time comes that I need a new one. I was told by someone though that you need to switch the ecm to a SO one too to reap the full benefits of going with the SO pump. Something about the HO ecm doesn't hold some kind of solenoid in the pump open as long as the SO ecm does. Is that correct? Is it really necessary?
I think the latest is that an SO can work on an HO, but not the other way around.
BTW- the HO was ONLY in 01 and 02 model years, and ALWAYS had the 6-speed trans. If the vp44 truck doesn't meet these requirements, it's not an HO.
Oh, and the 48RE is exclusive to HPCR trucks. No vp44 trucks came with it.

I did my own with a 12volt red LED from Radio Shack and a replacement oil pressure switch for the BD kits as sold through US Diesel Parts. I think I pait a total of approx. $38 to do my own, and could probably have done it cheaper if I knew what sort of oil pressure switch to order. I used old speaker wire to do the wiring, sending one leg to the switch (-) and tapping into an ignition hot wire under the dash (+) -- I recall using the same one I power the gauges from. It works like a charm!
Yes, the SO with your TST pm3 is the very best choice!!
HOHN: I couldn't remember if any HO's came with an aouto late in 2002 or not. So any HO will be a 6-speed truck? Good to know!

VP44 capatability
About a month ago my 027x vp44 went out and I replaced it with a 029x vp44 from a bus. The pump is calibrated a little different for more fuel and less rpms but in my truck it runs better than the old 027x and the rpms have not lowered, and it will be compadable with your ecm. Thats one way to go. The folks at MWFI told me it would not work, but they were proven wrong.
