VP44- Worst IP ever?
Not me............

I'm on VP-44 number 4 with 138,000 miles........

..And judging by the Check Engine Light that popped on yesterday......looks like I'll be on APPS number three when I get back home from vacation at Casa Del Shovelhead this weekend..........

I think RattlinRam is still on VP number 1.
Mine last 300k. 5 Lift pumps though. The computer was shot and what ever rotates on it was worn out. Friend of mine has box on his and it last to 110k with an upgraded lift pump. It is all a crap shoot and if you are pushing it. Most of the box out there require more out of the computer on it, on an already poor design imho. Not sure if there is a box out there that doesn't tax that computer. Then if you don't get it flow the inards wear plus it get hot cooking the computer even faster. We can keep dreaming that FIAT will stand up for poor choice of injection pumps by cummins. But really we can blame the government again for pushing more regulations that the P7100 couldn't meet.

Guys, I don't like to be the bearer of bad news, but the VP44 is NOT the worst pump out there.
That distinction belongs to the CAPS pump, on the ISC 8.3. That thing is the biggest pile of junk ever designed. Period.
At one point, when you bought a reman, because there were NO new ones to be had, they came with a 6 month warranty. Because the average service life was 7.5 months. There is a comforting feeling. Makes me feel better about my 6 VP44 pumps in 8 years.
Anyway, enough of that.

No one really disagrees that all Gen 2's have a seriuos problem that is costing us out of our pockets $1-1.5k a whack, times 1 million owners, give or take a few. Having adequate fuel pressure helps, but they still break too soon.
Why not try to petition Chysler/Cummins/Bosch as a group for a fix? It seems the elctroics baord melts in the heat over time, as best I can guess. Look at the numbers, they are staggering on what we are spending on POOR(use your own description) rebuilds from apperntly all rebuilders(some better than others, of course). It is proably not the rebuilders , but Bosch who is the real problem, as they set the spec.
If this was a tax from IRS, we would be throwing Tea in the river.
How about if every Gen 2 owner on this site sighed a petition to go to Chrsler /Cummins/Bosch for a fix? I am sure we could get members interested from other sites as well.
What have we got to lose, but another $1 Billion in VP44 pumps replacements out of our pockets.
What do you think, Administrators? Members?

The best I have heard is my cousins 02 Dually, he had 385,000 on the original VP and his 3rd LP when he got rid of the truck, he towed 10-15k lbs daily in his construction business around 150-200 miles/day. He traded for an 08 with the new Cummins and is starting to miss his old one since he has had a few problems with all the emmissions crap on the new truck. Its really the luck of the draw.
I'd sign a petition - going on my second replacement VP44, first at 65K, 2nd at 87K miles. Now I have a FASS and fuel gauge, but what gets me is that the first VP44 crapped out mechanically - bad lift pump. The second crapped electronically. I can understand the first, and the FASS or whatever aftermarket lift pump is a logical upgrade. However, the electronic failure - couldn't somebody design an aftermarket electronic heat sink if the problem stems from heat? My two cents.
Trying to get money out of Chrysler for ANYTHING other than new car warranty items right now would be like trying to get blood fron a stone.
And Cummins sells the engines to Chrysler without a warranty.
Class Action against Bosch?.......... who knows?

you think you got it rough just think how many VP re-mans CHRYSLER had to buy to fix trucks under warranty. I always wondered if somewhere there was a calendar with a big red X in a Chrysler office noting the day the last VP equipped truck was out of warranty. I'm on VP pump #2. First one died under factory warranty at around 80K. Still had the original lift pump until it started leaking when that wonderful ULSD came along. When this one dies I'll get one from the aftermarket supplier we use.
