pump rebuild

i was wondering if you had any problems with the electronics as you stated they were almost 400. did you change them out to? rick

in order to change the psg (electronics on the top of the pump) you pretty much hafta rebuild. and you definately hafta recalibrate it

Talking VP44 rebuilding

Congratulations on your success with repairing your VP44 I know you are aware you saved yourself a large pile of money. Doing it in spite of all the naysayers was a good move. You must be an advocate of the old saying CAN,T NEVER DID NOTHING. congrats again JCarew

Well, I would say all is not lost. Your post of the rebuild will shed new light for all those w/the VP44. If you rebuilt the entire VP44, seals and sensors couldn't one take it to an authorized bosch shop w/the bench test to recalibrate it?

The reason I ask is, I can get any bosch parts from my uncle, just have to have the part #. He could then run/test the pump after rebuild....maybe not for free but it's not going to be $1k. Just thoughts if/when the code strikes again.

it is quite possible to find someone to calibrate it. they hafta have the bosch 815 stand with the vp44 kit. it takes anywhere between 90-120 minutes just for calibration. they also hafta dPhi 1 it which could take upto 60 mins. the dPhi 1 is the measurements that are required for the angle of rotation after you have put the pump back together. especially if you disconnected the AOR sensor (soldered to the psg) off of the shaft.

How much is a shot vp44 worth?
Would i get $500 ea for shipping a few old pumps to the bosch rebuilder people?

reason im asking is cause I bought a couple of brand new cheap vp44 pumps, for 600 bucks each and no core charge. (from a closing shop)

i already put on two of em on different trucks, and i have 2 old pumps lying around, and could probably find a lot more for no money with mechanics who did the same thing

each shop is different. out of respect of the owners and advertisers i am not at liberty to discuss what our shop pays for cores. but i will tell you 500 is too high.

oh yeah shops buy cores without selling you a pump. like i was saying ours does but you wouldn't get no 500 per core

Why the heck are they so exspensive....supply and demand....I hate the system, cummins builds a motor that won't quit and you never have to repair or buy parts for if treated descent, then they find a flaw and they got you by the *****....bull if you ask me....my3sonsracing...hats off to you man.....way to go ...Keep ON Keepin ON!!!!

A lot of the biggest reason is for one thing the test equipment from bosch is about 250,000 testing takes about 3 hours rebuild and tear down is about 2 so it takes a while to retest one. Parts are the second. Parts for a VP44 are not cheap. We are seeing more and more vp's due to the fact of the conversion of the old diesel to the new ultra low sulfur diesel and the gaskets shrink and cause them to leak

Well, the dead pedal and power loss struck again while towing. Plenty of fuel, 15psi and clean filters. Another issue that has shown up is that when high idle kicks in the truck will die. Does one complete this rebuild process hoping it's just a stuck cyclinder and gasket issue and re-install only to find out it's an electrical part of the pump - OR- does one just buy a new pump? Is there a way for one to test the electronic part of the pump? Any suggestions would be appreicated.

Take the pump off the truck and take it to a certified shop that rebuilds the pump and have them test it. Most places will test and tell you what the 44 is reading. If the codes are fatal inside the psg then the pump needs to be taken apart rebuilt and tested. But yes the pump can be tested without being rebuilt

ok, thanks. My uncle works at a bosch pump facility. The truck still runs and drives just when towing it cuts out. Will have to take the day off to remove it for testing. I guess, then I can decide to rebuild myself or buy another pump from him at $1k.

ughhh, let me retract that...as it's $300 to test a pump. Thinking I might have to just bite the bullet but if anyone has other options please let me know.
