VP44 question
so I just had a bout with the lift pump , after installing a FP fitting and guage, the truck runs good and fp is @ 14 psi at idle and 10 at hard throttle
now my question is I understand a bad lp puts strain on the vp but do they go bad just on their own, from poor design, another words has there been cases that the vp takes a dump while the lp is still good , this is just preventitive curiosity

Yeah, the electronics can go out on them even with a perfectly good lift pump.
My VP didn't see less than 10psi for a few years then just died on me last year on the dyno.
If you have a VP44, there is always a chance it could die. But having a good fuel supply to it definitely helps keep you from unnecessarily shortening its lifespan.

There were some teething problems with the very early VP-44s. It was production line type stuff. By the time yours was assembled, the bugs should have been worked out. I'm confident the mechanical parts on my VP-44 are doing OK. Now, I'm a litle concerned about the electrnics getting tired.
Got about 114k miles on mine. So far, so good. On my 3rd. lift pump though. The second one was dropping down to 8 psig under hard acceleration, so it went to Lift Pump Heaven. It had about 70k miles on it. The original one was dead by 36K miles.

the deal is this, I am a pretty good gas motor mechanic, but diesel, has me worried that I am gonna be left sitting on the side of the road, without a clue, I would like to get rid of all the parts that are troublesome, so I down to just regular maint. that isn't deisel specific, which is like second nature to me, to maintain a gasser

just keep reading this forum and you'll be an expert at diesel maintenance too. of course when the mill stops turning you'll still be sitting on the side of the road, but you'll have a clue.
