VP44 question....

I am trying to figure out if my pump is bad. I replaced my lift pump with a new one after i bought my truck just to be safe and for peace of mind. Now after i replaced my lift pump my truck started and ran for maby 3 seconds. SO i thought i hade air in my lines so i bleed them and bumped the starter a few times and to no avail, my truck WILL not start! The VP is getting fuel. if i crack my injector lines and crank on it they spew lots of fuel. but truck will not started for anything. But if i spray just a SMALL and i mean small, 1 second burst of starting fluid in the intake tube at the air box, and go around an crank it it starts right up and runs fine!, normal power, smooth idle and everything, nothing out of the ordinary.

Had dealer look at it and they said that fuel was draing back through the VP44 and wanted to replace it at the tune of $4300.

SO is my pump bad?? or is it somthing else, it just will not start, but will with a SUPER SMALL amount of starting fluid and then run super fine.

Also there are no codes at all.

I am puzzled.

First of all, if (or when) you do diagnose your problem, $4300 for a VP44 swap is just out of control.
(are you in Canada?)

I like how you are trying to ease all of our fears about you using ether ("super small" )
What year truck?
Did you check for codes?

Fill out you sig so we know more about your truck. Make sure you dont have a return line leaking. Fuel supply and return lines are known for rusting at the frame support clips esp. behind the fuel tank along the frame.

yes

yes it is a small amount of starting fluid like "SSST" less than a 1 second burst and truck will start and run fine.

I checked the fuel lines and all are fine.

Nope not in Canada. This was at a dealer in Iowa.

Yeah thats what they said $4300 i said push it outside and i will come pay you for what i owe you and will pick it up this evening.

I am a diesel generator mechanic in the US airforce also, and this has me puzzled, but I've never dealt with elctronic pumps only mechanicals.

could it be the fuel bypass valve? I saw a place online that sold them for like $68. Would make sense i think, dealer said fuel was draining back through pump and would not reprime to start.

What do you think?

Yes I had codes checked, no codes are pressent.

Worst case scenerio, you can get a pump for right around $1,000 and istall it yourself in 4 hours or less.

I've never heard of fuel "draining back though" the pump itself. Maybe draining back to the tank via a pinhole somewhere? Anything is possible, sure wouldn't want to get a new VP44 on there and find out that wasn't it though??!

Good Luck.

Mine acted the same when the vp died. It would run okay for awhile then sputter out and die. I'd have to crack and bleed a few injector lines to get it runnning again. It wasn't throwing any codes and I was baffled too. It did this for a few days then bam, it puked a huge cloud of white smoke and died. that's when it threw p0216.
