VP44 dying?

I have been reading several threads with basically the same symptoms I am getting with my 01. Dead peddle, light grey smoke, symptoms come and go, no power, etc. I had mine at the mechanic for a couple weeks and never would act up or leave a code for him to see. I have been driving it this way for about 9 months. I finally got codes tonight via the odometer 0500, 1693, 0216. Figure I am on borrowed time and some of the threads talk about collateral damage from failure of VP44. Would the codes mentioned confirm the dying VP44? Time to buy parts?

216= Dying injection pump...probably should change it sooner than later...may consider upgrading fuel system and install a FP gauge.

Thanks for the code info and advice on upgrade and FP gauge. From what I have read so far FASS is in my future along with the injection pump and I'll add the FP gauge as well.

I would agree that you're on borrowed time. As far as collateral damage, I tihnk most of what you risk is getting stranded. Your pump will simply stop delivering fuel, it is not a catastrophic failure. But I do remember someone say his disintegrated. I have only seen that once though, typically they pass away peacefully.
I replaced mine once I realized that my dead pedal was occurring alongside with 0216. I did not want to risk getting stranded in the woods.

replace it now before it leaves u stranded and needing a tow..when mine blew it seized the shaft to the timing gear and grenaded my core, had to pay extra $$ for extra damage, doesnt mean that yours will do that but u never know..

I'd check the codes with a scanner first. This should get you deeper into the code system. Next add a fuel pressure gage. You should have one anyway. It's possible that the lift pump is going bad. At the same time however if it is, the damage to the VP could have already been done.

The 216 code is not "always" the kiss of death but probably within the 90% range.

How many miles are on the current VP??? If you are over 150k it's probably time for replacement before you get stranded. You would be at the $.007 per mile so it's not a big cost of operation factor. Compare it to fuel at around $.17 per mile depending on mileage.

I am ordering the parts now and won't worry quite so much since the risk of other damage seems minimal. I have 146K miles plus on it. Original pump. I plan on adding a new lift pump and cam sensor at the same time. I am leaning toward the FASS 150 GPH without the filters. I can't complain, ran it till it stopped on a tank of gas, long story, guilty wife. Just drained the tank primed with good fuel. Never missed a beat. Have had a Banks Stinger Plus (tapped wire) on the truck since 2002 so life is good. I'll have the mechanic poke around in it for more codes. Might have more than one problem.

C'mon man..I've had the p0216 code so long that I've taken out the bulb behind my "check engine" light. That baby has thousands of miles left in her.

Just kiddin. Are you getting your pump and FASS from MWFI? This is where I am looking to get mine come tax return time. My truck has become so wishy-washy that I can't bear to count on it. One day it's a bear to get going (low to no turbo whine) and the next it runs like a striped-a$$ ape and my turbo humms like our jet APU'S. Keep a posting about your experience as you go...

I got mine from MWFI and I've got about 20k on it . Can't complain at all. Great service and no core for 30 days, They pay shipping back on the core.

It rattles right up there with the best of them. haha

I am trying to decide between the FASS & VP44 from MWFI or the VP44 from Blue Chip. $500 difference in the VP44 pumps and from what I can gather so far it is for a steel bushing and "new" computer in the BC. There is a thread discussing the best VP44s those seem to be the two talked about the most.

I don't know what the differances are or if it matters to my application ?(no mods)But I do want to get a good one .Is there any other things that sould be done at the same time ??? Should/shouldn't I take it on ,Whats involved?

If you've got the money I'd try the Blue chip pump, but if like me you are on a budget Midwest fuel injection has good pumps,my VP from them has 200k on it and is still fine.
(next time I'm still going to try a bluechip)

A little helpful info

Hey new to the forum but not to cummins. I have an 02 that I just replaced the injection pump on, and if you have a 216 code in the computer it IS time for a new pump. I went with the blue chip pump myself and am having good luck with it (only about 5K on it so far) You do not only get a steel bushing with it but a fedex rated computer which is guaranteed to be brand new and is a more reliable design than the older ones on the vp44s. As far as putting a FASS on it, unless your running some serious performance upgrades a standard high flow lift pump will work just fine and save you som money. I have a Carter high flow pump mounted to my frame rail and it will never go below 5psi and that's with it cranked up and being nasty, but to each his own, good luck
