VP44 Affect on 1999 - 2002 values?

I bought my 2001 in Feb. Thought i was an okay deal. Now I wonder. When I bought, I did know about lift pumps, injection pumps, etc, etc. Now I've read all these post and figure that the VP44 has to fail sometime.

My question is: do you guys think that resell values might be lower on these trucks because of the failure possibility, or, is this just a well kept secret and pity the poor buyer who has to face the problem?

I'm already keeping my eye open for a source to fix the problem whenever it happens.

Easily 80% of the possible future buyers have no idea that sites such as this exist, so have know prior knowlege of the VP44, most won't even know that's what it is called or what it does.

I totally agree with phox-muldr. Most people just put diesel in (most of the time) and drive them. Hit the dealer for oil changes if the fast oil changes won't do them. They may search out a local diesel shop for repairs if they have been stung at the dealers but that's about it.

I can't even begin to tell you how many guys I've tried to strike up a diesel conversation with and they just don't care or don't know. As long as it runs , it's fine.

I think there are an awful lot of trucks out there that have had no trouble what so ever. I sure don't hear many complaints on the Dodge side.

Now Fords....if they will talk, seem to spend more time at the dealers than at home. haha The last guy I spoke to had 2 lemon laws and still driving a F.... guess I'd be in something else. I suppose they figure the odds of a third are pretty small. Go figure.

DM's most love them or hate them.

I too bought an 01 BEFORE learning of the VP44 and lift pump problems. However the previous owner had put a kit with a frame mounted lift pump on the frame rail in front of the fuel tank. OK good, but, I still plan on installing a commander control system to monitor engine parameters, and would highly recomend a fuel pressure gauge or at least a low fuel pressure warning light.
That being said, I would still buy this truck again. You just need to keep tabs on your fuel pressure.

That's what I have. A Holley blue mounted on the frame rail and a Commander with the FP kit. Running 16 - 17 psi at idle and ~12 - 13 WOT.

12valves go for more than 24valves(vp trucks) around here. even with higher mileage, older interior, and the non quad cab doors. bit i also believe that there are still some people who are unaware and think a cummins is a cummins.

Stretched the spring in the Holley pump. And the sensor is on the bottom of the fuel filter housing, so it's probably reading about a psi high just from a bit of static head.
