I'm tossing around whether to buy a brand new dodge, or buy a used 24 valve, or 12 vavle. I have been driving a couple. I have drove 03 6 speed and liked it, 04 h.o. auto and loved it and I want to mod so i dont know if I should buy new. Today I drove a 99 3500 5 spd dually and I loved this truck. I liked it better than the new one. I was wondering how many people have had to replace the vp44 pump. I read somewhere that the 12 valve pump was called the million mile pump and the vp44 was not reliable. Is thistrue? Do 98.5+ come with cats on them?

 

Here is the truck I drove today and they want 18900 for it. I checked kelly blue book and it said 20500. Do you think this is a good deal or not? I could probably work the price.

The VP44 is not as reliable as the P7100, just from the fact that it is lubricated by fuel, not oil, like the P7100. I have a 99 and love it. If you get a truck with a VP44, you will want to put a fuel pressure gauge on it immediately so you will know if your lift pump stops functioning properly. Anything less that 8 PSI at any time and the lift pump needs to be replaced. You can get the large-hole banjo bolts since they seem to increase the life span of a lift pump, about 30 bucks. If your lift pump is working properly the VP44 should be fine for many, many miles.
The 24v trucks, 98.5 and up, do not have catalytic converters, except a few cases of California truck.

Hold them to that advertised price of $2,100.00!

 

I have an 02 24v HO and at 77K the lift pump ceased lifting and the VP went south... The service tech informed me that the reason for the moniker "VP"-44 is that they are "Very Pricey". The $2,100.00 spoken of just about covers what the cost is had Cummins not covered it under their warranty. Good Luck with your future purchase..
