Vp44

So, I have been having issues in my 02- 2500 with dead pedal. Error code 0216 has come up. I had the problem trouble shot by a Dodge dealer, who says my injection pump needs to be replaced. They said I had 48 ounces of fuel on fuel test, which meant lift pump was fine.

Now, for the interesting part. That same dealer will do the repairs (new injection pump) for $2000. I called another dealer closer to my home, they want $2700. Cummins wants $3700. Why such a difference in price? Dealer 1 charged $1495, dealer 2 $2195, Cummins $2695 for the injection pump. Each of the second two wanted to re-trouble shoot it too for another $125.

Does anyone have any ideas? Cummins made a deal with me to reimburse me for 50% of the part, if I had the work done at a Dodge dealer or Cummins authorized service center, up to $700.

I would look into this more first. I thought 0216 was related to coolant temp. I recenty has issues with starting, idling and power, all which went away when I unplugged my ECT sensor(which by the way still read the correct temp). So I replaced the ECT and it fixed my issues. Just give that a try and see what happens when you start and drive it, it doesn't cost anything.

Failing that, you can reset the APPS and measure the APPS voltage, here is a nice write up

0216 is usually a death code for the VP44, or at least in my experience. If I were you, I would seriously consider replacing the VP44 yourself. It's not that terribly difficult, and there is even a video how to on youtube (Diesel dan VP44 should get you there). You can get a remanufactured pump for about $1050 shipped. It shouldn't take but half a day at the most to replace. Good luck.

Agreed, if it does come down to the VP, doing it yourself is way worth it. I also used the dieseldan videos and it went smoothly.

From what I can see:

Dealer 1 is quoting you the job NOT using the mopar reman. $1495 is about the going rate for them buying an aftermarket reman and adding their markup. We do this where I work and give the customer two estimates using the "mopar" part, or the available aftermarket pump we use (which has a 3 yr warranty). Our aftermarket co does require us to change the lift pump out IF it's still the original style stock one....but even then we can get both pumps installed for less that what Mopar wants for a reman pump alone.

Dealer #2 price would be the going rate for a "mopar" reman.

Cummins......I've heard the same thing, as well as read some posts here over the years, that they seem to get a premium for their pumps (but it's "ok" because there is a big blue "C" on the sign outside as opposed to a dodge dealer)

P0216 is considered the VP44 death code. However, the volume "test" is not a good representation of the lift pump!

The only way to know that it's working as needed is to check pressure! I'll bet it's very low to nothing at cruise or WOT. Even though you have flow at free flow, that does not mean it'll make it into the pump.

Plan on a pump upgrade WITH the VP44.
