Unhappy vacuum pump/ $1200

Hello all and happy new year.
I brought my 2001 ctd to the dealer today to have a small oil leak looked at. The oil is coming from my vacuum pump and the dealer qoutes me a price of 1200 dollars to repair.does this sound right or is the dealer crazy?
Any response is great

Hold on.....there is a fix for about 4 bucks.....I think its most likely the seal between the vacuum pump and the power steering pump....very common problem and DC just loves screwing people by replacing a perfectly good vacuum pump....in addition to doing a search here, you can find some useful links here (the first one is the actual procedure):

I should probably say that I havnt done it myself - so Im just passing along info. Im sure someone else can give you the exact part number and first hand knowledge. Just wanted to catch you before you took it to the dealer. Good luck.

Yup, dealer told me the same price. Fortunately mine was covered under warranty.

I just did the seal on my 2002. The seal you need is part # 28X38X7AV. This seal is made of Viton. I got it through Kaman Ind. via International Seal & Packing.

ISP would like to work through a dealer thus my using Kaman. I have seen a part # 10924 from CR, but when I checked into the material that is was made of it was not Viton. If it's butyl rubber it's only good to about 200 degrees. I don't think that's high enough for this application. Viton is rated for 400 degrees. The seal cost me $9.67.

I used the directions in the first link in Dr. Evils post without a hitch.

Although I did the work myself, I did find a local mechanic that said he would do it for about $120 if I could find the seal. I'm sure you could find someone to do it for you locally if you are not comfortable doing it your self.

Either way it is a lot cheaper to repair it than to have it replaced by the dealer.

Hope this helps, Frank.

WOW fellas thanks alot I am a master tech at volvo cars and brought my truck to the dealer to take advantage of my "warranty" , so the fact that i can do it my self for way cheaper is awsome. Plus I like my own work alot better than the other wrenches I know and Know of. again thanks a ton!!!
