Updates to the VP44 ?
Updates to the VP44 ?
I had my lift pump and VP44 replaced by Cummins last week. The pulled the engine serial number off the data plate replaced the pump with, in their words, a "like for like" replacement. Ever since I bought the truck years ago, I will leave a moderate hazy cloud when I leave a dead stop or just a moderate puff when I romp on the throttle on the highway. With the new VP44, my truck will roll a thick black cloud for 20' or so that practically obscures the lane next to me when I get into the throttle hard from a dead stop and a thick black "streamer" for a bit when I punch it on the highway. EGT's also climb at a faster rate than they did before.
It would seem to me that this new VP44 is dumping quite a bit more fuel than my old one. I called Cummins and talked to the service manager I dealt with for the repairs and he said that it's not a juiced up IP... they only replace "like for like", but he did qualify that statement by saying "unless there have been any updates to the VP44 from Bosch. The new pump would incorporate any updates from Bosch if there have been any."
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining since the truck runs like a scalded cat now... even more so now that I finally got around to putting my Edge box back on the truck. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any updates that Bosch may have made to the VP44 that would make this replacement pump juicier than the origianl pump from '01.
