turbo

Is it normal to have an oily, sooty residue in the turbo on the intake side? Thanks

Some oil around the impeller is normal. Check the down flow side of your turbo. Remove the clamp and rub your finger around on the inside of the rubber boot. It should be clean and oil free. IF you have oil entering into the post turbo airflow you have a seal going out.

This is why you should always allow your turbo to cool down to 300 before you turn it off. Normal driving is usually not a problem, heavy towing or hard throttle use is. The oil in the turbo can cook or "coke" leaving harmful deposits, and shorter seal life. Letting it idle for even a minute will reduce the EGT's significantly.

A large amount of oil entering the post turbo side can mean a runaway engine. The engine can keep running on its own oil and from what I understand you cannot shut it off. IF this happens I have been told to put a clip board over the entrance to the turbo, or a C02 fire extinguisher to starve the engine of oxygen.

BTW... NEVER put your fingers (or anything else you value) near the intake of the turbo when it is running. For obvious reasons it will suck your fingers right in!

Hey there neighbor! I have found someone close to my area! I'm about an hour from you. I have the K&N and have always had oil and those black marks ( streaks ) around the blades. I have 84k and no problems so far.
