Hello fellas. My question is my truck smells like an 80's diesel lately. I thought it might be fuel but I have ran many tanks through it with the same result. I hope this isn't some precurser to a majior problem. Grid heaters seem to be working. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Corey

 

Might be the refineries changing formulations.

Hi Minnesota-Corey,

did you change oil recently? We did an oil change with Rotella, and it stank so bad afterwards, I actually posted to the forum to see what was wrong! One thing that I found out is that the rubber cowl that lines the rear of the engine compartment has a habit of falling down, and ours had - this allowed engine compartment fumes to get into the cab. I also read that Rotella is especially smelly!

I extended my blow-by tube after my "breather bottle" fell off the truck. There is a lot of vibration on the 5.9L

A hose is seen from the front of my truck, hanging down. The oily smell is gone from the cab now, and the front of the engine thanks me (it's not oily anymore)

Smell started before changing oil and the smell is coming from the exhaust and stinks as if it were an 85 chevy diesel in 10 below weather. I hope its coming from the refining of the fuel but I don't know. A better way to desribe it, is when you start a diesel and its cold generally the exhaust stinks. After warm up the smell will go away, but not mine lately. I could drive for 2 hours and it still stinks. Hope this helps.

 

Sounds like an exhaust leak. Are all of the clamps tight/leak free under the hood?

I noticed after bombing my truck the exhuast smell became a lot stronger for diesel. Smells like a truck running rich.

 

The exhaust on mine is a wonderful rich blend of horse power and torque topped off with a pinch of hot and stinky. I love the smell of cooked diesel.

 

Mine stinks too. I have a crack in the middle of the exhaust manifold.

When I get up on a stool to pee into my tank, the hole is too small for "it" to fit . The only thing that I can think of is to use a funnel?

Any suggestions?

Ha, Ha... I guess I left myself opened for that one.

 

If you have white smoke warming up, and heavy black smoke or white/black smoke when hot and still have the smell, you might have an injector problem with to much fuel in one or more cylinders. The VP44 could be out or the computer could be not working properly for that cylinder. Have you lost fuel mileage?

I would get a Vis Guage and check for fuel in the oil. That would tell tale of a leaking injector.

I more likely think its a computer problem.

Nothing smells better to me than a old GM 71 seris engine starting in the morning. White smoke and smell everywhere.
