truck missing and white smoke
truck missing and white smoke
Hello all, I was thinking about buying a 01 2500 and took a test drive and when you really get on the truck it starts to cut out and miss like it is out of fuel. The truck has 150k on it what is your idea of the problem and what could be a fix.Truck runs fine until you hit it hard. Also seems like it may need ball joints.
Just my .02....sounds like the fuel pump or injection pump to me. I think the fuel pump for my '02 was about $300...the injection pump was about $5000..parts and labor. Then 6 months later fuel lines started leaking......mine (the truck) got traded in for me (dealer knew about the leaks) my other half was tired of dealing with her. Good luck and Take care!
try checking codes with the key. turn it on and off 3times, and on the third time leave it on and any codes should come up on the odometer. If you get a PO216, thats for the injection pump timing circuit, and is and good indication that the VP is on its way out. This can also be cause by insufitant fuel supply from the lift pump, but usually by that point the damage is done and you'll wind up replacing both.
On a side not, it could also be a injector sticking open, but most times you'll notice that through out the rpm range, even at idle. What happens is the fuel doesn't atomize properly because the needle in the injector tip is sticking open, allowing the fuel to just dribble out. Its not building enough pressure to atomize the fuel properly, which in turn will cause that cylinder to miss. The white smoke is unburned fuel.
Dieselchick, no offense, but it sounds like you got hosed on that injection pump install. For a tech that knows what they are doing, it should probably only take them 5-6hours to replace at the most, and you can get a rebuilt pump for $1100-1300, although I'm sure they mark it up somewhat to make money off the deal, but thats just plain nuts.
