My truck died on the way home tonight with my Jeep behind it. I had just finished pressure washing all the oil off the front of the enigine from the crankcase vent. The truck started fine and drove fine for about 3 miles until I reached the first red light. From that light it pulled fine then when I let off the throttle to change gears it started to sputter and died. It would not and will not start. It cranks but nothing. I have fuel pressure according to the gauge. The lift pump is new, the Vulcan big line kit is new, the fuel filter is new. I cycled the key and checked the codes, the only code is P1693. I did some research on the web and apparently this is a companion code that means nothing, it just lets you know that a trouble code was at one time present. There are NO other codes. Someone please help. I have no idea where to start and I need this truck on the road. Every day it sits I don't work. Many thanks in advance.

 

crack an injector line and see if you have fuel there.....and check to see if you have fuel at the VP44

 

My fuel pressure gauge is connected at the VP44 inlet so I know there is pressure to that point. I will try cracking an injector line when the wrecker finally gets here with the truck.

 

Truck just got here, cracked the injector line closest to the front end, no fuel while cranking. Any ideas?

What is the fuel pressure?

Have you had it scanned with an OBDII reader?

 

Other than some VP codes, a bad CKP sensor can sometimes cause the engine not to run.....I say sometimes because usually the truck will run but very rough with no power....

Unforntunately, this is all just speculation....the only way to properly diagnose this problem is to have the truck scanned so that the correct code can be retreived.

 

I won't be able to get the truck scanned until tonight or tommorow. What is a CKP?

 

Fuel pressure is ~12-13 psi when the lift pump is cycling.

 

Sorry to say, but you will have to get it scanned.......... CKP = Crank Position sensor....

 

Do you mean the camshaft position sensor down near the VP44? I am not familiar with a crankshaft sensor and it doesn't show up on this crude schematic.

 

P1693 is same "Companion" code I got when my VP-44 Injector Pump failed. I too had good fuel pressure. That may or may not be your problem.

Autozone plugged in a scanner and the dreaded P0216 code showed up. Hope yours is different. Don't know if they will lend out their scanners but worth a try, since your truck is not running. Only other choice is the dealer.

I hate to say it but I do think RJ is correct .....the only way to be certain is to have it scanned. I was just throwing the CKP issue out there as a possibility.

 

I can get my hands on a scanner (not just a code reader), just not until late this afternoon. I've never heard of a injector pump just up and quiting, don't they usually give you a warning? This was instant, like turning off the key. Thinking back the truck probably didn't even sputter. What I though was sputtering was probably just the compression of the engine turning over before I pushed the clutch in to try and start it. Being a former PSD owner it was like a CPS failing.

I sure hope it's not the injector pump. It would be REALLY bad timing considering the tax man is about to come knocking.

 

Usually the VP does fire off some warning shots before it croaks. However, while it is rare, they can die on the spot without any prior warning. The VP44 ECU PC board fails and decides to just pack it in.
