Transmission Fluid
Transmission Fluid
What is the difference in atf+3 and atf+4 and did I mess up by putting atf+3 in my transmission (47RE). I had myself in a bind by not having any other vehicle available to go and change it out.
Do I need to change it later on?
Thanks in advance for replys.

I've been running ATF3 max life for about 45000 miles now still shifts great. no problems yet. however I don't tow very much either
. had to adjust the bands once at about 48000 miles I now have 62000 on it

The only real difference in ATF+3 and ATF+4 is the type
of additives they put in the fluid. Dodge recommends the
ATF+4 to be put in the 2002 and above trannies.

I was told by the dodge dealer that, the atf+4 is used in the 99+ trannys and it is a synthetic blend. I need to get mine flushed, but can't find anybody besides the dealer who has the +4. I have not needed to add any since I have had the truck. They did all that when they put in the new valve body last year, and I have only put 30k on it since. The truck has 67k now.
ATF+4 is a proprietary fluid from Dodge.
To my knowledge, only AMSOIL carries a compatable fluid at this time.
The FTC has already initated a plan to remedy the situation.
(monopoly laws, use of proprietary parts to keep warranty, etc.)

Valvoline MaxLife ATF is recommended by them for use in AFT+3 and ATF+4 applications. The MSDS clearly states that its use will not void new car warranties. However, it also states is formulated with "premium base stocks" indicating that it isn't a synthetic. I'm presently using it in my transfer case. Here's the link, then select "Product Specs" from the left hand side.
