Transmission Filter Source

I'm planning to change the transmission fluid and filter on my 2001. I've read that the only place to get ATF4 is the Dodge dealer. Are good filters available elsewhere or is it better to buy the Dodge filter?

You should be able to get a decent filter anywhere. I got my last one at Napa. My tranny guy likes to use the 96 filter on all of the 47RE's because its design allows pulling the fluid from anywhere, not through a hole, like on the later model filters. Ask for one for a 96 and one for your year and look at the difference.

The NAPA and Carquest filters are just fine.

Stamey, did you notice any difference when you use the 96 filter?

Don't honestly know at this point. I'm just passing on what my trusted tranny builder told me. It does make sense, but I have not tested it one way or the other. I purchased a filter for my 96 and my 99. I'm taking back the 99 filter and getting another 96 filter for the 99.
