when was the last time your transmission was serviced? May just need fluid and filter changed. I know mine won't go into overdrive in the winter for up to 10 miles when it needs serviced. Also adjust the bands.

Change the governor pressure solenoid and governor pressure sensor and it will shift.

Could very well be the RPM sensor on tranny extension housing. Not very expensive and easy to change. Check connector also. Always a good ideal to clean all heavy electrical connectors/grounds. Next would be the governor pressure solenoid and tranducer mounted on valve body.
Have the bands been adjusted also??

im goin check the rpm sensor tomorrow. but i was talking to someone in town and i was informed that if i unplug the connector on the tranny and try to drive that it will apply full pressure to 3rd gear and should start off in third gear and if not then 3rd gear is smoked or the seals between 2nd and 3rd are gone not allowing it to shift. anyone here of a test like this.

Your an EVIL person!!!
I read this yesterday and this morning my truck wouldn't shift out of first gear It was a little funky before but it shifted through the gears before this morning.
Since I need it for daily work I'm taking it to a tranny shop. I'll let you know what they say and how very bad the bill was.

yeah tranny problems are never fun. but this morning i pulled the connector and it does have 3rd gear which tells me its gone yet.. . . . . but on another note i found some wires on the back of the main connector where the insolation fell apart and off and also the 3 wires on the sensor right below main connector. i gonna try to fix this up and see where it takes me. any input from you experienced guys would be appreciated.

thanks again
