torque converter question

Can a torque converter slip, like a clutch would and cause a loss of power? Also I am having a problem with my truck lurching like someone lightly hit me from the back when I am stopped. It does not consistently happen once or twice a day. Could this be the torque converter locking briefly?

If it's coming apart it could -usually accompanied with various thrashing noises and metal going through everything.

The lock up clutch can slip - usually first in overdrive lockup then in 3rd lockup. Fluid will start burning as it gets worse and you will likely notice shuddering as you apply power. If you change it before it flies apart you may not have to overhaul the trans. A good valve body and band adjustment/service and filter at that time will assist in keeping things together.

What you are describing sounds like you may need an APPS reset.

Also clean all of your battery cables and grounds before doing the reset. It could cause the same problem.

My 01 is doing the same thing and getting progressively worse. It went from what you are describing to completely slipping starting off from a full stop. I find manually shifting into 1st eases the slippage somewhat. I am looking at a new HTS or Goerend transmission as I don't want to just band-aid a failing tranny. I have been told by 2 excellent mechanics that it is the TC and that I was lucky to get over 130K miles on the stock tranny!

ood luck!

I don't have any thrashing noises or anything like that and my tranny fluid had nothing out of the ordinary when I changed it. I have done apps reset a bunch of times and recalibrated it. I am taking it to reputable cummins specialist tomorrow hpoefully he can steer me in the right direction. The reason that I thought that it might be the tc is in any gear from about 1500 rpm it just dosent pull.

There is also a type of lurching that is OK, although probably not what you are talking about.

When things are working fine - light throttle - high gear - low rpm -lockup, you can feel a tug-tug -tug. That one is just the engine firing. I noticed it after I got the new torque converter and thought something was wrong -but figured out what it was.
