Question torque converter lockup

Has anyone converted, or know if anyone has converted, thier CTD to a manually operated Torque converter lock-up?

I had my Suburban 700 R4 converted at a minimal cost during my tranny rebuild. I could eliminate to lock-up, or initiate it with a dash-board mounted switch.

Often times I wish I could (or had the option) to do this while pulling my three horse slant load in hilly terrain.

Anybody got any hints or suggestions?

My suggestion is to put a trans temp gauge in and then learn how important it is to drive in a way to keep the convertor locked. Even the new 48re allows you to have torque convertor lock up in manual second gear for extremely heavy loads. With my old gasser my trailer would slow me down to a point I couldn't keep the convertor locked up on steep grades. I would bury my trans temp guage at 250, and during the summer the trans temp light would come on (280). With the diesel I can slow down, lock out od, and pull the grades keeping the convertor locked up and trans temp will stay around 180.

ok the answer......

Heck ya you can install a lock up swich OR even install a lockup box from almost any of the big tranny builders for our truck. It will unlock automatically so you can stop without killing the truck in the event you forget to flip the switch.

It will also interface with an exhaust brake.

Hey guys, I thank you for your responses! I am getting a drivers side windshield post instrument cluster with a Trans temp gauge, and an engine oil temp gauge.

I have contacted two Dodge tranny rebilders, but neither have ever heard of the auto lockup box as you described. Any names or phone numbers I can call?

Thanks

I try not to, If I do, I ease up on the go peddle. Stock tranny, don't want to break something.

The resistor just keeps it from throwing a code when in use.

What resistor? Thats why I disconnected mine because of the codes. The instructions I used didnt mention a resistor. Where could I find the correct instructions to see what resistor I need?

Thanks, mooseman

This is the switch that I'm going to try to install. Although I don't really understand what the diagram says.

It looks like you cut the or/bk wire coming off the pcm, connect a 50ohm 10watt resistor in line before connecting it to a 12 relay in the open position the other side of the switch is connected to another or/bl wire in a wire group coming off the trans pin # 7. Like I said, I'm not sure if I'm reading it right.

Maybe someone with better electrical know how will step in.
