too much oil???????

checked oil today after sitting for couple of hurs. level was about 2- 2 1/2 inches above safe mark.. looked through paperwork from dealer shows tey did oil change recently and added 15 quarts! is this too much, I thought it was 12, and if it is too much is it enough to cause damage to anything? am going to dealer monday and i am going to show them. another question what is correct grade of oil? dingo

Holy $hit! A 99 24valve only hold 11 quarts of oil. You can put 12 in it but not no 15. I'd take it back to the dealer and have them drain it and put new back in, or better off just do it your self and that way you know it's right.

I see a large amount of blow-by in your near future.

DB

That is a gallon too much. My '01 takes 11 quarts. Did they think it was a Ford.

It shouldn't hurt anything, you just might loose 4 of those 15 quarts out the blow-by before you get to the dealer. I think I'd see if you could get something free out of the deal like a Truck Wash with engine detail. 8) The underside will be covered in oil, so that would seem like it would intell a free wash job.

DB

Re: too much oil???????

Well fellas I just drained a full gallon from mytruck witl the dipstick now registering in the safe zone!!!! That is not a good feeling. I dont trust dealers for anything. I dont even think this servicecenter has ever had a diesel in there before. I hope those monkeys dont ever have to touch my truck again. I had to use a impact wrench to take off drain plugggg, would not come off otherwise, twisted extension. ....... STILL love the truck ...

dingo

I avoid the dealer at all costs too. Not sure about the Cummins but I know some engines if overfilled can cause the crank to spin through the oil which foams it. Air don't lubricate. I love my CTD too, can't stand incompetant people who are paid good money to know what they are doing but don't.
Tim

Re: too much oil???????

that is a good angle about the injector leaking, but the reason i knew that it had 15 quarts in it was bcuz they had a list of services done to the truck.... such as replace windshield, which we all know happens more than normal in our rams. also had listed replace power steering pump, e brake pedal, and oil and filter change and 15 quarts15 40 wt oil. Na*a filter hope and think that it is better than f**m filter. Well not that bad I hope . still under warranty at least... in service date 5/99......
dingo
